Small Spaces, Big Transformations

McCormick Ranch residents, Scott and Susan wanted to transform their small backyard into unique space for entertaining. The 675 square foot space featured pavers and desert landscaping and they wanted to create a more inviting space that would be great for entertaining friends and their grandchildren. Landscaping by Andre was called in to help design and create a functional space. “This space immediately presented a few challenges,” said Lance Trowbridge, designer. “It was a small area with drainage issues, plus there was an interior atrium that we needed to work around. We also had to bring everything through the front doors because there wasn’t a gate or access to the backyard.” In the end, we created a beautiful space with turf for the dog and an outdoor seating area with pavers. We relocated the cactus to make the space more child-friendly and added a wonderful aloe tree to the indoor atrium. We also brought in several colored, urn style pots color that played off the clay tile roof. We added plants and flowers to give the space, so much needed color. Overseeding in Arizona

As the evenings start to cool off, we tend to get lots of questions about when to overseed in Arizona. Here a few tips: • Don’t overseed too soon • Wait until at least 3 consecutive nights of temperatures in the 60’s • Don’t cut your grass all the way to the dirt • Before you put the seed down, make sure your irrigation system is fully functioning (or call us for an irrigation tune-up for only $25!) • Once the seed is down, keep it wet until it germinates (we suggest several times a day for 5-7 minutes each) • By week 3 or 4, you should start to see new grass, which means you can cut back the watering to every other day for 10 to 12 minutes a cycle. • Maintaining the new grass is just as important as getting the seed down correctly, let us know if you need any help. Landscaping by Andre has been providing service to Valley home owners and businesses for over 50 years, feel free to call us to schedule a consultant to discuss your overseeding needs, (480)...

Seasonal Pruning

Pruning is one of the most important practices in landscape management. We recommend pruning before the summer monsoons hit in Arizona, especially if you didn’t tend to your trees and bushes during the winter months. Overgrown trees can definitely topple over or break apart during the high winds of the monsoon season. How to determine if you need to prune? • Do you have an infection or insect infestation? • Has it been more than a year since you examined your trees and shrubs? • You have a mature tree that needs some TLC? • Are your trees or bushes top heavy or overgrown? What you’ll need to get started: • Pruning tools (or an appointment with us!) Advantages to pruning: • Correct irregular growth habits • Save trees from uprooting or breaking apart during the summer monsoon season • Future cost savings • It can bring in an earlier and longer bloom period • Reduce hazard to people • Increase plant health • Stimulate growth One last thing to consider during the hot summer months is over-watering. It’s a common mistake by home owners, which can lead to trees up-rooting much easier. Landscaping by Andre recommends pruning on a yearly basis to keep your yard healthy and thriving. It’s National Garden Month

April is National Garden Month and we have some easy ways to for you to get started. Whether you are a seasoned pro or rookie, Landscaping by Andre can help you build/maintain a variety of gardens. First, decide what you want to plant. It may be flowers, herbs, fruits, veggies or a combination of everything. Next, determine where the best spot is for your new garden. Do you have a dedicated space in your yard? Do you want to dig into the ground or create raised flower beds? Then, think about space – what direction does your new garden face? Will it get enough or too much sun? Is it on a sprinkler or drip system? Or will you need to water it manually? How much time do you have to invest in gardening? Lastly, think about the soil amendments. We like to use a blend of topsoil, mulch and sand for drainage. We also recommend mixing in some bone meal and gypsum. Easy ways to create or enhance your garden: • Plant a cutting garden so you can enjoy freshly cut bouquets all season long. • Plant herbs for cooking with and for making your own herbal tea. • Plant your favorite fruits and veggies, so you can eat fresh foods all year long. • Build a pond or water feature in your yard. • Plant flowers that attract butterflies and enjoy their natural beauty. • Try planting new fruits and veggies and get your children involved in gardening and being outdoors, they might even find a new favorite food! • Plant your favorite colors flowers and plants...

Watering in Arizona: What is the right amount?

Our customers often ask us, “How often should I be watering?” Here in Arizona, drip irrigation systems should be seasonally adjusted to accommodate for warmer or cooler weather. One of the most common errors we find is irrigation timers are set for watering too frequently and for too short of a time. For example, if you are watering every day for 20 minutes, year round, with a 1 gallon per hour emitter, that’s less than 1.5 quarts of water hitting dry hard dirt. Basically, that’s the equivalent of pouring out a Big Gulp on your yard. Very little of this water will actually get down to the deep roots of the plant/tree. It will simply evaporate in the first fraction of an inch of soil. The goal of drip irrigation is deep, thorough watering which needs to be tailored to the type of material we are watering. Also, watering TIMES should stay constant while we add/subtract watering days depending on weather. • Plants should be watered for 2-3 hours per cycle, with up to 3 cycles a week in summer, and as few as 2/3 cycles per month in the winter. • Grass watering – The importance of a health and well maintained lawn is key to keeping its water use low. A dethatched, healthy lawn has an open canopy with loose soils and a sand base. This allows the water to get all the way to the soil/roots instead of getting hung up in the thatch. Watering should last as long as necessary to see water just begin to stand. Under an ideal circumstance, approx 3/4 of an...
